It was an uneventful trip from Aurangabad to Delhi on Sunday. There are a couple of people from my field trip that are also at that same hotel as me (as well as a lot of other conference participants too). My hotel is about a 5 minute walk from Connaught Place - there are a lot of shops there - food, coffee/chai, and probably anything else you might be looking for. There is a little kebab and roll shop, I have had dinner there the last three nights, and lunch there on Monday - delicious! And the owner's sister lives in Kitchener ON! The conference venue is a bit crazy - it is an important government building, and the conference organizers received special permission to hold the conference there - the drawback - no wifi (security resasons), and you need to show your passport and go through airport-like security whenever you go in or out. So a different kind of challenge between talks.
Today is the second day of the smog emergency - when I woke up yesterday I was surprised at how smokey/hazy is was outside... turns out it is so bad they've declared a state of emergency, and the air quality level is severely poor. This explains why my throat is sore this morning, and why my eyes were burning a bit yesterday...
My talk was yesterday afternoon, it went all right - 5:30 pm is a tough slot (3rd in the last session of the day - in a day where everything seemed to be behind schedule a bit.
I am looking forward to the rest of the conference, and am hopeful that the air quality magically improves.
A view from the taxi on the way to the hotel on Sunday.
Essentially my own personal restaurant - so good. And they like us so much we got a discount!?
Taxi from the conference venue back to the hotel on Monday. The front seat (where I am) is the smallest spot... hence the giants say in the back with our new friend (phd student from Varanasi - but studies in Ireland).
Deccan Plateau field trip participants that presented on Monday - I am laughing because we are joking about group photos - there were a lot of them on the field trip.
In the main hall of the conference - it is giant and each place has a microphone -seems dangerous.
View (or not) from my hotel room.
Headline this morning on the news.

Was a breathing apparatus part of your minimalist packing? Stay indoors and if you have to go to the Kebab shop hold your breath. xo
