Darjeeling to Siliguri to Kalimpong to Bagdogra to Delhi

Nov 17
In case you’re wondering where I am at - I have been everywhere! Well it seems like it and it feels like it. Our drive back down to Siliguri was full of stops at different landslides and a cross-section of the front foot hills of the Darjeeling Himalayas.  From Siliguri we went back into the mountains but up the Teesta River Valley to Kalimpong - another Hill station - and until the 1960s it was a major transit hub/gateway into Tibet.  On our way up there were a number of stops along rivers and viewpoints. There was a slight mishap when Anne was attacked by monkeys - two big scratches and some serious bruising. It isn’t clear that they weren’t bites and as rabies is a concern, Anne was able to experience the local health centre - our police escort was once again clearly very handy to have. After our last supper together we received participation certificates and I tried to convince our group that we needed one more photo stop at a fan - which unknowingly to me - basically caused a major traffic incident and also started a giant debate about the definition of fans and cones - it’s all just a pile of rocks.

I say good bye to the geomorph people at the Delhi airport and head to a hotel where my next group meets up starting tomorrow evening. I will use down time to do a bit of washing and look at some of the details for the next couple of weeks of my trip.

For some reason, I can’t access all my photos (limited internet in the Bagdogra airport) so just the pictures from this morning for now.

First attempt at a selfie of me and Kanchenjunga- but you can’t see the mountain, and instead it is Austrian Martin in the background (apparently if your name is Martin you should be a geomorphologist).

Next attempt - but it is windy - then I stopped trying.

Monastery in Kalimpong.

There was a golf course!?!

The trip wouldn’t be complete without a surprise stop at a nursery?!?

The international incident causing pile of rocks.
